19. December 2010: Schälsick Bar @Hyatt Regency Hotel Cologne
Great quality food is the right description for the dishes served in the Schälsick Bar (usually the Glashaus Restaurant, but that was closed that night due to a private event). The bread served is fresh and the selection of spreads is great in taste.
The “International Starters Buffet” (EUR 16.50) has a great selection of different antipasti of which the “Vitello Tonato” is definitely the best (just tasted great!). The different kinds of salad offered were nice when it comes to the number of choices but they didn’t look like freshly prepared really. The lemon salad sauce was really tasty though. Especially as the lemon sauce wasn’t anything like sour.
The main dish – a beef filet (EUR 34.50) – was very tender. Although the meat was quite a piece it was perfectly medium and had a nice crust. The sauce was good too – basically an ordinary gravy accompanied by potato dumplings. But as the meat was extremly tasty no heavy sauce was needed.
The atmosphere of the Schälsick Bar at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Cologne is okay for a pub but not really appealing for a restaurant – given the fact that this is not the place where you usually eat it’s okay. The prices are pretty decent too – especially if you take the current exchange rate into account.
The service varies extremly in quality depending on the waiter/waitress. While the waitresses are friendly and helpful, the waiter is also friendly but it takes him way too much time to fulfil the requests (quite simple ones like bringing another mineral water or refill the glass of wine). Definitely a major drawback.
All in all though, the dishes at the Schälsick Bar at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Cologne are very well-made and tasty. The salad buffet lacks a bit in freshness and the service can be partially improved – but overall, worth eating there when you’re sleeping there anyway.
