20. December 2010: Restaurant Bei D’r Tant
Hearty traditional German food and cheap German beer! That is the best way to describe what you get “Bei d’r Tant” (At Auntie’s) – besides a place where you still can smoke and therefore smell a lot like after. The upper floor is not that crowded and you’re not allowed to smoke.
The escalope scalloped with cheese and ham, accompanied by potatoes and a salad was very rich. It tastes good in the meaning of if you like it hearty, salty and heavy, the escalope is great. If you’re more for the fine food, then this is definitely not the place to go. The potatoes are pretty salty and also quite strongly cooked (almost black).
The owner of the place makes it immediately clear who’s the boss – him! And he pretty much shows that right away – no need to argue or hope for friendliness: it’s non-existent! He’s quick and brings you what you want/ordered but in a manner you feel like you’re not really welcome.
The price on the other hand is really decent: 11.90 EUR for the Schnitzel and 1.50 EUR for 2DL of Kölsch – fair, I’d say. All in all, “Bei d’r Tant” is a typical Cologne restaurant with hearty food and cheap beer. Friendliness is missing but that’s not what you’re looking for in that place. Still, it’s somehow nice (maybe because it’s different).
