A truly local experience with lovely attendance: Mercearia São Pedro (5. January 2019)

| May 7, 2019 | 0 Comments

The Mercearia São Pedro was ranked rather high on TripAdvisor so it was time to visit it. The place is somewhat small but very atmospheric. After figuring that Mercearia is basically a grocery store with some tables for people to sit down, I appreciated the place even more. The owner came up to us and made sure we’d sit comfortably right away (although there was no clear empty table) and would greet us with some “local meat spread” to be applied on tiny toasts. And it was absolutely delicious!

I ordered the “tapa à pescador (tomato, Sta Catarina Tuna, anchovies and capers)” (EUR 4.50) by accident as I somehow read about the anchovies which I really wanted but oversaw the tuna. So, I ended up with tapas with tuna – and they were surprisingly good. Do you know how often canned tuna is a bit dry? This wasn’t the case here. Juicy, delicious.

The “tapa ovinho (ham, quail egg, salt and pepper)” (EUR 4.50) was a super thin slice of bread with a pickled quail egg on top and it was better than expected. Again, they somehow manage to keep it juicy (might be the effect of the pickled quail egg).

The prices for anything are more than fair – a bottle of water accounts for EUR 1.20, a glass of the house wine for EUR 3.00. The place is simple but lovely, full of details and has an incredibly friendly waiter who will make very sure you have everything you need at hand! Definitely worth visiting!
