Lovely traditional Afghan food experience in the heart of Zurich: Restaurant Afghan Anar (26. November 2019)
The Afghan Anar started as a pop-up restaurant a couple of months back and now opened its own location as a regular restaurant and I must say, it is quite an experience of its own. If you book for the “seating tables” you will definitely be closer to the actual Afghan experience than when you take a regular table. We went for the “mezze plate” (CHF 16.00 per person; for two in the picture) which was absolutely lovely although I cannot quite recall what all the things on the plate were.
Then it was time to share a couple of dishes which is basically the concept here (comparable to the Spanish concept of tapas) but just “the Afghan way”. We started with “Bolani Palak Paneer” (CHF 13.50) which was basically melted cheese in dough and it was absolutely delicious!
The “Kabuli Palau (Basmati rice with lamb meat, raisins, caramelized carrots, refined with pistachios and almonds)” (CHF 32.00) was great as well in terms of taste – personally speaking, it could have had some sauce with it (like a yogurt sauce or something) as it was partially a bit dry, but else, great in terms of taste.
One of my absolute favorites were the “Mantu (Afghan dumplings filled with minced marinated beef, Char Masala, served on Chaka, a lentil sauce)” (CHF 24.00)! It is some kind of dumplings which tasted incredibly delicious! And they had that element of sauce I was looking for in the previous dish!
The place is simple but nice in terms of experience. Additionally, the service really does a great job. They are friendly, helpful, and there at all times. I would like to mention a blond tall guy who really did extraordinarily and found the right balance between jovial and professional! Thumbs up!
