Tasty deep fried chicken in a place you wouldn’t expect to find it: Restaurant Zipang (15. March 2020)
When you are on Miyajima island, there are quite a few restaurants around but not that many are rated good respectively look like they are worth trying. The Zipang (which I only found out later that it’s called that way) was one which serves nice dishes. I went for the “deep fried chicken set” (880 Yen) with a “small sea eel rice” (380 Yen) and a miso soup. The soup was rich and slightly sweet, the deep fried chicken was crispy to the max and actually quite tasty. The eel rice was much better than expected (I had somehow expected something rather chewy and not so pleasant but turns out, it was absolutely delicious)!
The place is rather small as it offers a total of five “tables” which is basically twice “two people facing the wall”, “two people facing the kitchen” downstairs plus tree small tables on the upper floor. However, despite the small size, the place is lovely and appealing and you feel comfortable right away.
Furthermore, the waitress who runs the place together with the chef is friendly and attentive and speaks enough English so requests like “no ice” got across and were executed correctly.
As mentioned, you would not really see the place from the outside as something worth visiting but it actually is – therefore, if you are on Miyajima, pay the Zipang a visit!
