20. November 2009: Restaurant Candela

The restaurant Candela is located close to the city centre of St. Gallen. On the other side of the street, the restaurant netts is located which is part of the Brauerei Schützengarten.

This critic is based on a restaurant visit in the framework of a Christmas Dinner of one of the institutes at the University of St. Gallen. As the menu was already fixed and we were not free to choose, earlier experiences are also taken into account.

Restaurant Candela offers a inviting atmosphere. Although it looks quite sterile at first sight, the combination of wide glas windows and wooden design makes you feel like in a modern, confortable environment.

When you’re brought to your table, the waiters have already been helpful in taking your jacket. Their friendly, nice and helpful.

The menu offers is quite a wide variety of different dishes which in general have a great taste. The entry plate (an arrangement of different types of fishes) tasted good, the salmon though was a bit greasy.

The basil soup with the scallop was okay. Somehow the special note was missing, especially one couldn’t really taste the basil aroma which was expected to be there a bit more intensively. Also, the scallop missed something impressive.

The main dish, on the other hand, (beef filet) was really good. The only minus point which has to be “awarded” here was the fact that we haven’t been asked about how we want our beef filet cooked. Personally, as it was served medium, it was perfect, but still, from a restaurant of this level I’m expecting such things to be asked – even if there is a larger group of people eating at the same time.

The restaurant Candela is definitely a good restaurant which can be recommended to have a quick lunch or even dinner. The dishes are very enjoyable, the waiters are nice and the atmosphere is warmly.
