A lovely spicy Francesinha stuffing your belly: Restaurant Casa Guedes (7. November 2021)
Since the Francesinha is kind of the typical dish of Porto, we decided that we cannot leave Porto without having tried a Francesinha. I remember that I had one the first time I was in Porto in 2012 and wasn’t able to move afterwards since the thing was so damn heavy. So, I was, admittedly a b it afraid of eating one again.
Turns out, that’s harder than expected anyways on a Sunday. I had google the best francesinha in Porto and found a list of five spots, of which four were closed on Sundays. So, off to the one which was open on Sunday. Once we arrived there, we realised that it was closed due to vacation. So, on we go and finally ended up in a place which does serve Francesinha – Casa Guedes.
As a starter I went for “Bolinho de Bacalhau” (EUR 1.80) which was served super quickly (even swifter than the beverages) and was great to get your stomach started.
Since I thought it would take some time for them to prepare the Francesinha, I decided to go for another dish, the “Chouriço Assado em Àlcool” (EUR 4.90) which is basically a raw sausage on a skewere which you have to grill yourself in the booze at the bottom of the bowl which is set on fire. It’s a fun game but there wasn’t quite enough booze to entirely grill the sausage leading to the fact that the interior of the sausage was still cold (which wasn’t all too pleasant). Furthermore, the sausage is really fatty which is something you must like to enjoy this dish.
Finally, it was time for the “Francesinha Guedes (house bread, roasted pork, egg, mortadella, red sausage, fresh sausage, ham, edam cheese, special sauce)” (EUR 10.90). It had taken a bit of time to prepare it but it finally arrived and it was as heavy as I remember. Also, spicier than I remember but definitely as heavy. The combination of pork, sausage, mortadella, cheese, and ham is just so damn much. Perfect though if you’re not intending to eat again for the next 24 hours.
The place is super simple and not really set to stay a long time (at least not at the tables outside) but the service is swift and friendly, making sure you have a good experience. So, while the Casa Guerdes might not have been my obvious choice at first for a Francesinha, it turned out to be quite good and definitely a place where you can try one of them.
