When vegetarian dishes are actually quite enjoyable: Restaurant Haus Hiltl Sihlstrasse (11. November 2021)

It is a bit ago since I’ve last been to the Hiltl since I have this lasting memory that the buffet is just way too expensive for what you get. What I was somehow not aware of is that there is an actual à la carte restaurant on the first floor of the Hiltl called Haus Hiltl. And it’s really like in any other restaurant besides the fact that all dishes are somewhat vegetarian.

I went for the “Hiltl Tatar (eggplant, bio egg, capers, spelt toast, butter)” (CHF 18.50) which did not only look nice but was also surprisingly tasty. For me, it was seasoned a bit too much with paprika but other than that, it was actually a surprisingly enjoyable tatar which also had a texture which was very similar to actual tatar.

As a main, I went for the “red Thai curry (bamboo sprouts, oyster mushrooms, coconut milk, lemongrass, basmati rice)” (CHF 31.50) which really tasted like regular curry – delicious, tasty, just as a meal should taste.

On top of that, the place is nice in terms of atmosphere and interior design, however, the tables are pretty close to each other so you do not have that much privacy which is a bit of a nuisance but still acceptable in terms of distance between the tables. Secondly, the service is good – the waiter was friendly, relatively swift, and made sure you would have everything within a relatively short time-frame. So, if you want to eat vegetarian I would advice that you check out the à la carte restaurant instead of the overpriced buffet.
