Tasty traditional Mexican dishes in a nice location: Restaurant Los Girasoles (17. November 2021)

Since the Guide Michelin doesn’t really apply to Mexico, I decided to use another app called ‘La Liste’ which provides you with great recommendations around the world, ranking from the fine dining cuisine to the local recommendations. The Los Girasoles was one of those more local recommendations and I mus say, rightly so.

Once you’re seated, you get some salsa …

… and chips to dip it in. Which is perfect if you arrive there being hungry (as I was) so you get to kill your immediate hunger feeling with a bit of chips before actually receiving your food.

As the most easy approach is to share dishes, we went for the “sopecitos de tuetano (tradicionales sopes de maíz azul, tropiezos de filete de res, servidos con frijol y chicharrón seco acompañados de salsa verde y roja asada)” (118 MXN) and the tacos estilo baja (herencia de la cocina de Baja California, tacos de pescado rebozados en tempura, servidos con cebolla morada y col morada)” (160 MXN). I love the bone marrow sopes as they are intense in flavor and really a traditional dish of Mexico. I also loved the tacos estilo baja California although they are not Mexican in terms of what you find in them. However, despite the non-Mexican-ness of these tacos, they were delicious.

Next in line were the “dobladitas de queso (tortillas hecho a mano, queso Oaxaca, epazote, flor de calabaza y huitlacoche)” (75 MXN) of which I got to try the huitlacoche one (which is basically fermented corn) which was intense but all in all enjoyable. I think, I can say huitlacoche isn’t my favorite food ever but it’s definitely enjoyable.

The “quesadillas azules (de maíz azul, rellenas con epazote, flor de calabaza y queso Oaxaca adornadas con crema y queso)” (85 MXN) are a bit non-typical since they are relatively hard on the outside and cover the insides with a thick layer of dough. But in combination with the cheese and the salsa, they turned out to be quite tasty.

The “enchiladas de jamaica (bañadas con salsa verde cremosa y gratinadas)” (125 MXN) were not entirely to my gusto since the combination of the cheese, onions, the enchiladas and the jamaica sauce (which is sweet!) didn’t really go all that well for me personally.

The “panuchos yucatecos (célebre platillo de Mérida, rellenos de frijol, servidos con cochinita pibil, cebolla encurtida y salsa xnipec)” (90 MXN) on the other hand were delicious again. They were served with some cut vegetables including habanero so you would have to be careful on how much to apply to the dish but it was in any case incredibly delicious.

Last but not least, we went for the “chalupas poblanas (clásicas de Puebla con un inigualable sabor de Los Girasoles)” (80 MXN) and the “Tacos de la Plaza de Toros (famosos tacos al salir de la plaza de toros de chorizo, chicharrón y cecina con tortillas recién hechas)” (180 MXN). While the chalupas were good, the tacos de la plaza de toros were absolutely amazing and a fulminate ending to a great meal.

The place has tables on the ground floor where you can enjoy the sun but they also have a few tables upstairs which provide you with a view onto the plaza …

… from a generally lovely interior …

… and attention to detail. What I liked a lot was the friendliness and attentiveness of the waiter who made sure we would have everything we wanted at all times. Just how perfect service should be!

All in all, the Restaurant Los Girasoles is definitely a place I can recommend you for an extensive lunch break when you’re in the area of El Zocalo – worth visiting!
