No. 27 of Latam’s best restaurants – not sure I agree: Restaurant Rosetta (29. November 2021)

| February 22, 2022 | 0 Comments

The Rosetta was listed as No. 27 of the best restaurants in Latin America so it was sure time to give it a try! They also run a bakery so it was for sure time to try their “mantequilla con hormiga chicatana y pan de centeno” (130 MXN) to check out if their bread was as good as one hears it is. It turns out that the bread is indeed good but it isn’t much more than regular European bread – the butter with ants on the other hand was really enjoyable though.

Since they did not offer a tasting menu, we decided to share a couple of starters like the “endivias, vainilla, limón amarillo y pixtle” (203 MXN) which were super light and super refreshing. While endives are usually a bit bitter, this dish was prepared in a way that this wasn’t the case at all. Loved it to get started.

The “tacos de col rizada y pipián de pistache” (232.50 MXN) were definitely something else. I liked a lot that they did the tacos out of plants (like I have also witnessed a few days back in the Pujol) which made them much lighter.

The “costilla de res braseada y polenta rústica” (560 MXN) was exquisite. The meat basically fell off the bone as soon as you touched it with your fork and was incredibly smooth and rich – which was supported by the intensity of the sauce. While I’m usually not such a big fan of polenta, I liked this one quite a lot since it was coarse but smooth at the same time. And again, with the intensity of the sauce, it was just a perfect mix.

For dessert, we tried a couple different ones like the “mil hojas de cebada y helado de lavanda” (115 MXN) which was good – I especially liked the lavender ice cream since it was relatively smooth and still had that nice taste of lavender.

The “hoja santa y chocolate de cacao blanco criollo” (210 MXN) definitely looked super interesting as a dish, however, for me personally it was too intense in terms of chocolate flavor. Somewhat overwhelming to be honest.

The “helado de mantequilla, pan y sal” (115 MXN) was interesting since I haven’t had butter ice cream ever before but I was disappointed because I misread the dish as butter ice cream, salt ice cream and bread ice cream but it turned out to be butter ice cream with salt and bread. Not the restaurant’s fault but still somehow disappointing.

The drinks they offer are decent but rather on the small side of things. The “corazón de mamey (Havana Selección, pixtle, vermouth rosso y cacao)” (250 MXN) was interesting and had a nice intensity.

The “wyborowa, estragón, luxardo y agua de coco” (250 MXN) on the other side was relatively plain and didn’t taste like too much.

The place is somewhat nice but also a bit confusing. The interior is appealing but it’s a bit too dark for my personal gusto. On top of that, the background music could be toned down a bit so you could actually focus on the conversation.

The service is not really at the peak of its performance. While friendly, they are semi-attentive and it takes way too long to get another bottle of sparkling water.

Other than that, the Rosetta is actually a really nice place which offers good food for fair prices in an interesting interior and fair service. Not necessarily mind-blown by the experience but it was definitely a positive one.
