Great for a drink and the view, overpriced for lunch: Restaurant Mater Terrae @ Bio Hotel Raphaël – Relais & Châteaux (19. March 2022)

The Mater Terrae was recommended by the ‘Free Walking Tour Guide’ since it is listed in the Guide Michelin as a vegetarian restaurant. In my humble opinion, it’s not a place you must visit. Let me explain why. Once you’re seated you get a nice selection of different breads which is enjoyable, no question.

They also serve you a surprise from the chef, in this case a “carrott mousse and almond mousse with crumbles” which was actually great. So, so far nothing to say you shouldn’t visit it.

However, I went for the main course and I must say that the “Classicism (tasty homemade “Chitarra” style tagliolino pasta with vegetarian carbonara and sauteéd tofu)” (EUR 32.00) was much better than I had expected since the sautéed tofu actually felt and somehow almost tasted like real bacon. So, the dishes are good, no question. But when you end up paying EUR 90.00 for a lunch without booze in Italy for two plates of pasta, it just feels off!

To be fair, the view from the terrace of the hotel (6th floor) over the roofs of Rome is lovely. I cannot argue with that. And the service does an excellent job so you feel welcome and appreciated but it is just too much somehow.

Still, if you are up to go up to just drink something (which is also possible), then I can recommend you to visit the Restaurant Mater Terrae on the 6th floor of the Bio Hotel Raphaël.
