Quite a disappointment really: Lobby Lounge Restaurant & Bar @ The Fairmont Monte Carlo (17. June 2022)

This is one of the experiences where you are misled by what the pictures online promise you, but it won’t live up to the expectations. The Lobby Lounge restaurant is exactly that, a lobby lounge restaurant. So, you might say, one could realize that if you checked the name of the place. Fair enough. However, it was still somewhat okay since the view outside onto the harbour (if you ignored the building sites which were on one side) was still quite nice.

I went for a “French Mule (elderflower St. Germain liquor, lime juice, Fever-Tree ginger beer, rhubarb Angostura bitter)” (EUR 22.00) to start the evening, and it was a decent drink.

Since the weekend would entail quite some dishes, the decision was taken to have some small bites like the “falafel with cumin yogurt” (EUR 12.00) which was nothing special …

… the “caviar d’aubergines, sésame grillé” (EUR 8.00) which was definitely more enjoyable, as well as …

… the “tapenade d’olives noires Taggiasche, focaccia dorée” (EUR 8.00) which turned out to be super intense. I think I have never tried such an intense tapenade. Definitely something one would be able to enjoy, but also something which overpowers everything else.

The “hummus with pita bread” (EUR 8.00) was my favourite dish. I mean, of course, as I’m a big fan of hummus, it is easy to be biased towards that dish, but I do admit I liked it quite a bit.

What was a complete rip-off though was the “loup de la baie de Cannes, parfumé aux agrumes” (EUR 40.00) – the fish was tiny, and it was nothing special. And EUR 40.00 for that is just out of this world – I mean, seriously, nothing acceptable if you ask me …

The fact that you would have to pay an additional EUR 8.00 for more than one side was also a bit off the charts. The “fries” were definitely too stroppy, but at least the “mixed salad” was enjoyable. Frankly, overall, the dishes were quite of a disappointment.

At least the service was relatively friendly and attentive – compensating a bit for the rest. But the EUR 9.00 for a not very good “double espresso” finally re-confirmed that this is not a place I will visit again when in Monaco.
