An absolutely interesting Turkish-like dinner experience: Restaurant Gül (20. July 2022)

| August 25, 2022 | 0 Comments

The restaurant Gül is a modern interpretation of Turkish food, made palatable for the more central European palate. And the best way to try out the different dishes is the “Gülty Menü Sürpriz” (CHF 80.00 per person) which is providing you with a nice overview of typical Turkish dishes served in the Gül. The first round consisted of “Nohut Salatasi (chick pea salad with Stracciatella di Burrata)” (usually, CHF 14.50) which was not only light but also overall enjoyable.

The “tursu up your life (pickled cauliflower)” (usually, CHF 8.50) definitely looks interesting but wasn’t necessarily a dish I was celebrating much since it tasted a bit like cauliflower pickled in vinegar. I’d say a bit of a peculiar taste – not necessarily to my liking.

The “Yufka (home-made flat bread from the wood stove)” (usually, CHF 2.00 per 100gr) was absolutely great. It’s just a very tasty kind of bread which is truly delicious and goes so well with many other bites.

The “Ayse’s Manti (home-made, little dumplings with well-seasoned potato filling, served with a Salça butter served on cream yogurt)” (usually, CHF 19.50) are actually great. They are aromatic, quite delicious in their taste and their intensity.

The “Hiyar Dövmesi (classic cucumber salad with mashed cucumber, mint, and pistachio)” (usually, CHF 12.00) was quite refreshing, and, therefore, a good balance in between rather intense and heavy dishes.

The “Mini Lahmacun (with minced lamb meat, sorrel, parsley, and lemon)” (usually, CHF 9.50) was absolutely to my liking. Strong, intense, meat-based flavours with dough as a base.

The “Canim Salata (grilled lettuce, Treviasano with a nut butter béarnaise)” was definitely interesting. I mean, not necessarily interesting in a way of “I absolutely want to try that again” but rather as in genuinely interesting.

The “bite on a salad leaf” (they did not really explain what you ate right there and then) was amazing, though. Intense in flavour, overall just lovely.

The “grilled mega bell pepper” (or something like that) was nice too since it was stuffed with onions, herbs, and was, again, of a rather intense kind of flavour. That being said, it was something which was not on the regular menu which is always a bit funny and interesting.

The “Baklava (the classic from the East with almond frangipan)” (usually, with the ice cream, CHF 20.00) was absolutely great. I mean, for me it’s always way too sweet and sticky but if you like that, or if you are able to stomach more than one bite, then you should definitely try their baklava.

The “home-made Earl Grey ice cream served on fresh berries” was nice. I mean, I like ice cream already, and I haven’t tasted Earl Grey ice cream in the past – and I must say, I liked it.

The place is rather lovely – but if you are inside because it had just been pouring cats and dogs, and the heat is a bit non-bearable, it’s not the best. But, if the weather is nice, and you booked a table outside, then the Gül is quite an amazing place!
