A great new place in the middle of the city – with a lovely garden patio: Restaurant Enja (21. July 2022)

Apparently, it’s not that long ago since the Enja has opened. So, it’s rather new to the gastro scene in Zurich. And it’s a nice place worth trying. If you can, try to get a table in the garden (instead of inside) which is kind of a patio, and it is rather nice in terms of everything being covered by plants and trees. It comes with one downside, which is the number of flies you’ll find around the table. In any case, once the very friendly and attentive waitress had taken up the order, we were served an “amuse bouche” which was simple yet nice.

The names of the dishes are rather standard. And since I like corn, I decided to go for “Der Mais (i.e., ‘The Corn’; spicy grilled corn ribs with creamy dip and Enja Chimichurri)” (CHF 16.00) and while I was a bit surprised at first, I must say that it turned out to be much better than I had expected. The corn was properly delicious and enjoyable.

“The flank steak (regional grilled flank steak served with summer vegetables and bacon jam) (200gr)” (CHF 46.00) was great. The meat was tender yet super intense and enjoyable. The bacon jam which was served with it definitely added to the dish – I am not sure, I had ever tried bacon jam before, but it was super flavour intense and absolutely great to add to any dish, I imagine.

The “Pommes Alumettes” which came with it were fine too – not too stroppy but nice little crisp, and just enough, so it would, in combination with the above, make for a good main course.

As mentioned, the place is rather lovely – and definitely worth sitting outside. The staff is super friendly and overall professional – although the quality of the service deteriorated a bit throughout the evening. Still good, though, but not as ‘at peak’ as in the beginning. The wine selection is okay and with the “Raposo Rioja, DOCa, 2018” (CHF 75.00) you can’t go wrong – solid, drinkable wine. Since the place is relatively new and, since it’s Zurich, therefore, quite busy, I would highly recommend you to book well in advance.
