A good steakhouse but on the pricier side: Restaurant Goodwin – The Steak House (9. August 2022)

I had never been to the Goodwin before but somehow had confused it with the Goodman (which has been closed down a couple of years ago), so, I was curious to see what the Goodwin has to offer. It started nicely with a small “salad with roast beef” as an amuse bouche.

I then went for the “Goodwin’s beef tatar (made from marbled tenderloin, 120gr)” (CHF 29.50) which was seasoned to taste – and which was actually mouthwatering. The meat would basically just melt in your mouth and was perfectly seasoned. Personally, I wouldn’t have mind some butter to the whole thing – but other than that, it was great. And for once, there was enough toast with the meat (which is very often not the case for me).

As a main, I went for the “marbled rib-eye steak (350gr)” (CHF 65.50) which was absolutely good. It wasn’t really amazing in terms of flavour and taste though, meaning, I have had better steaks for less money in the past.

The sides on the other hand were great. The “sweet Corn grilled in Josper (served with Parmesan)” (CHF 6.50) was a bit tricky to eat, but was actually delicious. The “grilled vegetables” (CHF 6.50) were fine as well, but could have used a tiny bit more seasoning. The “creamy spinach with Parmesan” (CHF 7.50) and the “sweet potato fries” (CHF 6.50) were looking delicious too.

The sauces didn’t really live up to expectation. The “Goodwin’s sauce (60g) with red wine, berries and honey” was decent, but the “pepper sauce (60g) with cream and fresh pepper” was somewhat too watery for me. Frankly, they might know on how to grill meat, but they are less knowledgeable to create the perfectly matching sauce.

All in all, the Restaurant Goodwin is a decent place which offers decent dishes – but is definitely on the pricier side. I mean, CHF 400.00 for two people is quite a bit – and it is not like we had tons of food. And the quality wasn’t that outstanding, either. The service on the other hand was actually great – there was one guy responsible for everything, and he was making sure that you would have everything you needed and wanted, and was also nicely jovial. To sum it up, it was nice trying it, but is not necessarily a place I would come back to.
