Great Metzgete like every year but with slightly weaker service: Restaurant Falken Wiedikon (1. November 2022)

| December 24, 2022 | 0 Comments

It has become an annual tradition to visit the Falken Wiedikon for ‘Metzgete’, i.e., the time of slaughter where all elements of the animal are served. With a very reasonable CHF 47.00 per person, you get a nice selection of different dishes and of different cuts of the animal. You can pick between five different plates, and you have to pick two. I went for the “Schmiede (“shoulder with caramelized pear cream, blood sausage ravioli with port jus and roasted onions, saucisson from Waadt served on creamy leek, and belly with kimchi cabbage and a hoissin sauce). The portion was not as generous as in previous years, but the quality of the dish was still absolutely great.

Besides the plates, you also get a few more elements like “blood sausage”, “liver sausage”, and the famous “Wiedikerli” together with beans, mashed potatoes, and sauerkraut. Just when looking at it again, I feel like I want to try this again!

The second plate I had chosen was “Grunz (crispy snout with pickled red onions, tender rips on creamy leek, pork head cheeks braised in port jus, crispy pork joints with pear cream)” and it was as good as the first plate.

Since we seemed to give the impression that we were apparently still hungry, we got another plate of blood sausage, liver sausage, and Wiedikerli – and it was definitely too much …

… but it was quite generous. As every year so far, we went for the “Barbera d’Asti, Pörlapa” (CHF 66.00) which fit the dinner quite well.

The place itself is nice since it’s relatively traditional in terms of interior design, but still somewhat properly modernized, so you feel comfortable. When it comes to the service, I’m torn. The owner is super attentive, super friendly, and it’s just fun. However, he can’t be at every table at all times, so his employees support him. To be honest, though, the guy we had was not really making it a positive experience. Way too complicated, way too slow, and just somehow not really on top of things, which is a pity.

In any case, whenever it’s Metzgete, then I would absolutely and 200% recommend you to book a table in advance and dig into the ‘Metzgete’ experience at the Falken Wiedikon.
