12. June 2011: Restaurant Brechts

| June 18, 2011 | 0 Comments

The “foam of asparagus soup with fried quail breast and vanilla pancake” (EUR 8.50) was a bit too watery but tasted quite good overall. Especially the fried quail breast was really tasty – the vanilla pancake was not bad either. But the combination of some foam of asparagus soup together with a piece of fried quail breast and vanilla pancake tasted really great.

Finally, after long, I have had a real “Vienna Escalope fried in lemon butter with a choice of pan-fried potatoes and wild cranberries” (EUR 19.50). While usually you get something like a “Schnitzel Wiener Art” (Vienna Style) which is by no means close to a real Schnitzerl, we were served a real Vienna Escalope – large, thin, and made of veal and not pork. It was perfectly thin, crusty, and tasty. Also, it was big enough a portion so you had more than enough after enjoying it. The wild cranberries fit good with it, the pan-fried potatoes were not bad either but also nothing special.

The bread which was served in the beginning was great because they served us two different kinds of bread: curry bread, and paprica bread. Both tasted amazingly good without any paste or so but the pastes which were served (and especially the large-grained sea salt) tasted great too!

The dishes were absolutely good – nothing to complain there and the prices were also pretty fair. Of course, for Berlin it is quite expensive, but pretty much everything is quite expensive in Berlin if you’re going out. The double espresso costs EUR 3.50 (and is okay), 0,4L coca cola cost EUR 4.50. Overall, the prices are quite fair and good.

The atmosphere is one of its own – while the restaurant itself looks quite nice and appealing inside, the area where we had lunch was a bit different – it was basically a feeling of being a window doll as we ate in the window with view over the Spree – but between us and the Spree, there was a street and there were quite some cars passing by which didn’t make the atmosphere develop positively.

The service is absolutely friendly, nice, helpful, and good. The orders were taken fast, the way the dishes were served and taken from the table were good, the water glasses were refilled (and when I refilled it myself once because I was endlessly thirsty, the waitress even apologized to me when she saw it although I haven’t said anything about it).

Overall, I can recommend eating at the Restaurant Brechts (which is right next to the La Cantina in the Bar Tausend and maybe 150 meters from the Restaurant Grill Royal away). I wouldn’t do the tourist approach though and sit outside but maybe go there in the evening and book a table in the back of the restaurant because there, the atmopshere is great.
