Simple but delicious – Monkfish Cataplana: Restaurant O António (28. December 2022)
The start of the lunch at the O António was a bit bumpy. The waiters were somewhat busy, so I had to get up and ask for the menu to order some food. I went for the “salmon carpaccio” (EUR 8.80) as a starter, which was not really too great. It was relatively smokey and tasted quite intensively of salmon.
The “avocado salad with prawns” (EUR 8.50), on the other hand, was actually very enjoyable. For me, it was more of a prawn cocktail with avocado on the side than an ‘avocado salad’, but it was very tasty for sure.
Then, I decided to go for the “monkfish cataplana” (EUR 40.00) (which can feed three to four people easily) which is really just a mash of different seafoods like king prawns, monkfish, clams, potatoes, and vegetables. And as simple as it is, as delicious it is! Definitely worth trying when you’re in Algarve.
It doesn’t look too appealing once served, but believe me, it’s quite tasty really. Needed some salt, I found, but other than that, it was exquisite.
Finally, the waiter said he had a ‘caramel cream’, so I was excited, since I was looking forward to it. However, it turned out to be a “caramel flan”, which definitely made me much less excited about it. It was fine, but not what I had hoped for.
The place is simple on all levels, but it offers great dishes for incredibly fair prices. And once I made them aware of me being there, the service was actually excellent. So, when you’re in Albufeira, definitely worth trying.
