Good, but not number 2 of The World’s 50 Best MENA: Restaurant Trèsind (3. February 2023)

| April 16, 2023 | 0 Comments

Another day, another try of The World’s 50 Best MENA – this time, number 2! I was surprised how easy it was to get a table, but I was also ensured that it was a high-class dining experience since they had called in advance to reconfirm the booking. I went for the “Tasting Menu” (400 AED) which started with an “arugula pani puri” as an amuse bouche. It was lovely, especially since you had to pour the liquid from the pot below in the little pani puri, and it was a tasty bite. The only construction error was the fact that it was leaking, so part of the liquid poured onto the table cloth.

Next in line was a “missi roti with green chilli butter”. You had to apply the butter on the missi roti via the toothpick, and I must say, it was surprisingly better than I had expected.

Next in line was the preparation of a “chaat (modernist chaat tart)” at your table with liquid nitrogen …

… and a bunch of different ingredients, leading to a quite nice tartlet. And it was not only good-looking, it was also rather tasty!

Next in line was a great dish! The “prawns with asparagus salad, zeera aloo espuma” and a “tomato rasam” on the side was among my favourite dishes that night. The dish itself was of an interesting and refreshing intensity, which I enjoy a lot. The tomato rasam (which was basically some type of tomato soup) was quite delicious and balanced the intense flavours of the main part off quite well.

Then, it was time for a palate cleanser in the form of a “white chocolate & black lime bon bon”. It was one of these things, which you need to take into your mouth in one bite, as else you’ll create a mess. The filling of the white chocolate was largely liquid and had a kind of perfume-y flavour.

The main course was, at the same time, and this doesn’t happen very often, another favourite of mine. The assortment of “chicken khassi curry, barramundi salan, lamb kofta nihari, served with onion chili paratha” was just exquisite. A lot of very strong flavours, each paired with different meat. Absolutely down my alley!

Then, it was time for the “black forest mithai tart”, which was prepared with liquid nitrogen again …

… making it look all fancy …

… and then gorgeous with the red berries on top. And it was not only pretty, but it was also delicious. Despite the fact that I’m not a big fan of chocolate, I must say I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Last but not least, it was time for “paan candy floss”, which was nice, very uncommon, and sticky and sweet. But still enjoyable. I was missing the ‘link to India’ a bit in that one, but it was enjoyable.

I must say the service is great, and they are quite friendly. However, they are all trying to upsell, on the menu, the wine pairing, the wine, everything. And I get it, the more turnover there is, since there is a tip automatically added to the bill, the more tip you get. But if I tell you that I’m good the way it is, and you keep pushing, then it’s nothing but annoying!

All in all, the restaurant Trèsind is definitely worth a visit. It’s not the cheapest of all experiences, but for the fact that it’s number 2 on the list of The World’s 50 Best MENA, I believe it’s quite decent. Make sure to book in advance, since the place was absolutely full that evening!
