Definitely one of the better options of The World’s 50 Best MENA (No. 15): Restaurant Lowe (17. March 2023)

Apparently, the Lowe is No. 15 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants in MENA. Well, I’m not entirely sure about that, but I would definitely see why it ranks high up on that ranking. It is located quite a bit outside of anything central in Dubai, hence, it takes a while to get there. But it’s worth the travel, since the food is quite lovely. I started with a drink, i.e., “passion fruit, chilli vodka punch” (55.00 AED), which was nice and had a good intensity to it.

What I really enjoyed here, was the service, since they actually listened to the orders you placed. Very often it’s the case that they kind of serve all starters at once, which sucks when you’re eating alone because then you really have to hurry. In this case, I had specifically asked for a timed serving of the starters. And they managed to do so! I went for the “our wood fire sesame bread” (21.00 AED) with “romesco with crab, burnt butter and almonds” (45.00 AED), and I must say that I really liked the bread, since it was fluffy but it was intense and somehow enjoyable at the very same time. The sauce which was prepared with crab was equally enjoyable, and both went quite well together.

As a next dish, I went for the “leaf wrap with raw fish, shiso, tomato jelly, saffron mayonnaise” (32.00 AED), which was a nice bite. I mean, sure, not easy to eat since it was quite easily falling apart after the first bite, but it was great from a flavour combination perspective.

One of my absolute favourites that evening were the “nori and ricotta fritti, anchovy, lemon” (54.00 AED). Sure, you had to be careful to not get your palate burned, but if you were careful enough, you would get to enjoy it quite a bit. Personally, a great dish!

Next in line was the “kanpyo tartare, kohlrabi, avocado, shallot vinegar, falafel” (45.00 AED), which looked a bit boring at first, especially, because I usually find falafel not too exciting. However, in combination with the tartare, it turned out to be quite special and actually super enjoyable.

The “golden beets, sweet and sour citrus, chicory, macadamia” (68.00 AED) were surprisingly better than they looked. Frankly, when I just saw the chicory, I was like “oh no, really not feeling like this”, but it turned out to be much better since the beets were pickled and had quite an intense flavour. In combination with the citrus elements, the bitterness of the chicory, and the crunchy element of the macadamia nuts made a great combination.

What I liked a lot about the place is the fact that you get to peek into the kitchen and can actually watch the staff work on your dishes.

On top of that, the interior is quite nice, but the place suffers from the distance to anything central. So, if you’re not willing to pay around 80 EUR in cab costs (or have an own car), then it’s quite hard to get there.

The place is nice, also from afar, since it is simple in its design and, yet, it’s quite appealing in terms of how it looks.

All in all, I’m not sure the Restaurant Lowe is No. 15 of The World’s 50 Best MENA, but I must say it is definitely a good choice and a choice worth travelling. I liked the dishes, I liked the place, and I liked the attentiveness of the service. And the best thing is, you get everything for a rather reasonable price.
