A Viennese institution – but an overrated one: Restaurant Zum schwarzen Kameel (8. April 2023)

| June 11, 2023 | 0 Comments

The Zum schwarzen Kameel belongs to Vienna for more than a century and, hence, it has quite a reputation and is famous, so, people actually queue to eat here. And while it is amazing to be ‘welcomed’ (although welcomed is a liberal interpretation of selective friendliness) by a guy who seems older and more antique than the restaurant itself, I don’t quite see how this is such a famous place (or even a must when being in Vienna). The “amuse bouche” was something to put in your mouth, but far from memorable.

The “bread and butter” were definitely nice, though. I mean, I liked the quality of the bread and the butter was quite tasty too.

The “salsify cream soup” (EUR 10.00) was quite enjoyable, but also far from outstanding.

The “Viennese veal schnitzel” (EUR 28.00) was definitely good. I enjoyed the quality of the meat, the thinness of the meat, and the breading. So, all in all, nothing to complain about.

The “potato and Brussels sprouts salad” was okay. Somehow, I’m not the very biggest fan of the Viennese potato salad since it’s too dense, too heavy.

And while the place definitely has history and caters to a more traditional audience …

… which can also easily be seen by the table cloth …

… to me, it’s not worth the visit. Especially, since they are being overly complicated in getting a table and since the food isn’t really outstanding. To be fair to the waiter though, he was very welcoming, friendly, and swift in his service.
