Good for an early savoury vegetarian breakfast: Restaurant House of Do An (16. April 2023)
Although I have been to the House of Do An about 21 months ago, I did not remember that the place was vegetarian, so I was a bit surprised when I skimmed through the menu once we had been seated to see that there were no meat dishes. Sometimes, though, that’s okay. It was a relatively meat free weekend all in all, but I survived. And unlike the last weekend where my vegetarian experience was bugging me for about two days (due to digestion challenges), this wasn’t the case here.
I went for the “Wild Forest Rolls (lemon gras, seitan, avocado, beetroot, rocket salad, cucumber, carrot, sticky rice, black nettle, peanuts)” (EUR 5.40) with plum sauce as a starter. They served the whole thing within minutes after we had placed the order. Personally, I always prefer a sequencing to get a bite to eat before moving on. However, at least, it was good and nice to get your palate started.
As a main dish, I went for the “You Done Bowl (fried udon noodles in our home-made honey sesame pear sauce with fried seitan, broccoli, salad, carrots, and crispy, pickled vegetables)” (EUR 9.90), which was actually quite nice. However, the vegetables could be prepared a bit more. Most of them were basically just tossed in their raw. On top of that, I was looking for udon noodles with vegetables, not for vegetables with udon noodles. Hence, my expectation to get a proper portion of noodles was not fulfilled. Other than the formalities, the dish is actually quite enjoyable.
Since I was feeling a bit off due to walking in the rain for 6+ hours the day before, I was going for a shot and took “The Antibiotik Antidote (ginger, apple, lime, wheatgrass, coconut water)” (EUR 3.40), which sounded incredibly healthy, and it was actually quite nice to eat as well.
Secondly, I went for “Mama’s Special Tea (ginger, tumeric, mint, lime, kumquat)” (EUR 4.90), which was also rather nice.
The place is simple, and it’s a bit cold inside (I think you can feel the energy crisis in Germany), but the staff is friendly and helpful and makes sure you have everything you want and need. I think, the place gets full during the day, but if you go for an early lunch (aka savoury breakfast) at 10.30am on a Sunday, you’ll be fine as a walk-in.
