A nice French bistrot with a few smaller flaws: Restaurant Chez Be (22. April 2023)

Visiting the Chez Be was on my to-do list for a longer period of time since my sister had recommended it to me. So, it was time to leave Zurich and drive to Sursee, which is a good one-hour drive. And I must say, it was worth the drive. Once you’re seated, you get a piece of tarte as an amuse bouche, which is incredibly generous in terms of portion size, and it’s actually quite lovely in terms of flavour profile.

Since it was my very late birthday dinner, I decided to dig in, and went for the “sarines millésimées 2018 (herb baguette, cornichon sweet-sour)” (CHF 23.00) as the first starter, and I must say, it was great. There was not entirely enough baguette, which was a bit of a pity, but the combination of the flavours and textures was ideal. So, I can definitely recommend you to try those.

Secondly, I went for the “moules marinières et frites (300gr)” (CHF 23.00) as a second starter and I must say, I quite liked them. And not only the moulles themselves (I also learned that evening that the different colours of the moulles refer to their gender), but also the white wine sauce in which they were prepared.

The frites on the other hand were far from a revelation. I mean, sure, okay, but nothing more than that.

And as a main, I went for the “entrecôte café de paris” (CHF 48.00). Personally, I absolutely loved the sauce. Frankly, you could have just poured that over me, and I’d have been happy. Now, given that was not a possibility, I found the vegetables a bit random, and the French fries were too dry for me. The meat quality was good, but in terms of how it tasted, it wasn’t necessarily something you would remember for a long time – you would remember the sauce though!

Enjoying every bit and bite, it was time for the first dessert, the “Soorserli Chez Be (sour cream ice cream, cassis sauce, lemon olive oil)” (CHF 10.00), which sounded a bit weird at first in terms of combination of flavours, but it turned out to be quite delicious!

When it comes to the cheese selection “fromages (selected soft and hard cheeses)” (CHF 19.00), I do admit, I was a bit disappointed. Since this place calls itself a French bistrot, I was expecting a bit more, and also a bit of a better explanation than “a hard cheese from Switzerland” or the like.

The “madeleines” which were the friandises, were great.

I also liked the attention to detail when it comes to the interior decoration. And that is in line with the care, attention, and quality of the service.

All in all, I absolutely enjoyed the evening at the Chez Be. The one thing though, which is a bit suboptimal, when you have a few larger groups, is the noise level. It’s quite loud in there. All in all, the Chez Be is a great experience with authentically good French-inspired cuisine, very fair prices, and a lovely and caring host couple. If you intend to come here, you will need to book well in advance.
