An Argentinean dining experience in the UAE: Restaurant Sucre (30. April 2023)

I am starting to run out of restaurants I haven’t tried above a certain rating, so I ended up picking Sucre, which was ‘kind of’ close to my hotel. But, I was more than positively surprised! They welcome you in a very friendly and caring way – and serve you some bread (still hot) and tasty butter (with salt) right away.

As a starter, I went for the “cheese and caramelized onion, chilli empanada” (45.00 AED) as well as the “spiced lamb, tomato, olive empanada” (50.00 AED). And while the latter was okay, I actually absolutely liked the former. The smoothness of the cheese in combination with caramelized onions was exquisite. I would say, at the upper end of ‘charred’ for an empanada, but still okay.

Then, I tried something, which seemed to be typical for Argentina – the “baked provoleta (eucalyptus honey, chilli, oregano)” (80.00 AED), which is basically molten cheese with honey and oregano. And it’s heavy. It’s delicious, but it’s heavy. I mean, you feel like you’re full right after you’ve had that. But, of course, I had already ordered a main course!

As a main course, I had the “Australian angus ribeye (120 days grain-fed)” (230.00 AED), which was cooked medium temperature as requested. And it went quite well with that garlic glove on the side. I mean, sure, intense as hell, but definitely also delicious as hell. The meat quality was good and definitely above average.

The side dishes I went for were “charcoal roasted broccolini” (50.00 AED), which was nice, especially with the roasted garlic flakes as well as “confit piquillo peppers” (30.00 AED), which were equally nice. Finally, the “burnt avocado chimichurri” (25.00 AED) was a bit of a surprise, since I didn’t really know what to expect, but it turned out to fit super well with the meat.

Last but not least, it was time for a double espresso, which came with a little bit of something to eat. What surprised me, but I was happy about, was the fact that the coffee was actually super enjoyable.

Not only the food is quite decent, but the interior is also nice. It’s spacious, but still feels comfortable, and somehow the interior design combination works quite well. And it’s in line with the service quality, i.e., the waiter, who was responsible for my table (and changed throughout the meal), was friendly, attentive, and swift.

All in all, I can recommend the Sucre – since this place seems to be a bit more frequented than other ones, I would highly recommend you to book your table in advance.
