Absolutely the best sashimi I had in my life so far: Restaurant 893 Ryōtei (23. June 2023)

The 893 Ryōtei is a place, which was on my to-do list for years! However, every time I intended to go, it didn’t work out as the place is always booked out way in advance. Hence, you really need to plan this ahead and make sure you do your booking with quite a bit of time ahead. Once you’re there, they attend you immediately and take very good care of you.

We started the evening with a “Yuzu Fizz (Bombay east, tsurume yuzu, lemon juice, tonic)” (EUR 16.00), which was lovely and enjoyable to get started.

Then it was time to order a bunch of different things, starting with “tako (grilled octopus, tomato, avocado, onion, sesame soy dressing)” (EUR 18.00), which didn’t look that amazing, but turned out to be great. The octopus was super smooth and delicious in terms of flavour profile. Definitely a case where the looks were deceiving, but the other way round.

The “Gyu Tataki (short grilled beef slices, cold wafu sauce (ponzu, radish, ginger, chilli))” (EUR 18.00) was my least favourite dish that evening. Sure, it was not bad at all, but it was somehow lacking the little extra.

The “sashimi taquitos moriawase (tuna, butterfish, salmon)” (EUR 32.00) were generally speaking nice, however, to be fair, they were mainly dominated by the respective sauce, hence, it wasn’t much of an exciting flavour profile. And personally, the price for six small tacos is somewhat overpriced.

The “sashimi moriawase (large 25 pcs. chef‘s choice) (EUR 48.00)” on the other hand was mind-blowingly tasty! The sashimi was so smooth and full of flavour that you would just not be able to stop eating it. It was full of flavour, it was just absolutely outstanding, just excellent. I haven’t eaten something so exquisite in a long while.

The “Ō Toro (tuna belly, 2 pieces)” (EUR 20.00) and the “Uni (sea urchin; 2 pieces)” (EUR 20.00) were both good. I definitely preferred the tuna belly, but I would have preferred to eat it without the rice below, i.e., as sashimi or tatare than with the rice. The sea urchin was good, but did not create the same level of excitement.

The “tostada toro caviar (crispy tortilla, fatty tuna belly, caviar, 2 pieces)” (EUR 28.00) was somewhat interesting, and not too easy to eat. The tostada was crunchy, but due to the ‘cream and the texture of the tartare’, it was still very possible to eat it without falling into pieces.

The “tuna tartare with foie gras (tuna, foie gras, fig, tobiko, soy)” (EUR 25.00) was light and a surprisingly well-functioning combination of different flavours and textures. All in all, definitely enjoyable.

The “Unagi Royal (unagi, sake, foie gras, shiso)” (EUR 15.00 per piece) was definitely on the pricier side of things, and, frankly, not worth the money. Sure, it’s a tasty and enjoyable bite, but it’s not worth the EUR 15.00 just for one piece.

The “Chutoro (medium fatty tuna, 2 pieces)” (EUR 18.00) was exquisite. Not as great as the “Ō Toro”, but definitely in the same league. The “sake toro aburi (flamed salmon belly)” (EUR 14.00) was, unfortunately, not in the same league. Not because it was bad, but because it was somewhat disappointing in regard to the flavour profile. Flamed doesn’t add anything.

Last but not least, I went for a selection of different sorbets, like the “peach mint sorbet” (EUR 5.00), the “white chocolate strawberry ice cream” (EUR 5.00) and the “mandarine sorbet” (EUR 5.00). And while the individual ice creams were nice, none of them was somewhat special or outstanding compared to the others.

The place itself is rather lovely in terms of interior design – the modern industrial chic was something, which goes well with the overall atmosphere of the place.

On top of everything, the 893 Ryōtei also has great service, being attentive, making sure you have everything you need and want at all times, and on top of that they are friendly and jovial at the same time. That being said, you absolutely have to make sure that you book your table well in advance, as else, you won’t stand a chance to get something short notice.
