An absolutely lovely place with a little patio to sit outside and enjoy tasty food: Restaurant Clärchens (25. June 2023)

I would most likely have passed by if it wasn’t for a friend, who was leading us into Clärchens. The entrance is relatively nondescript, but once you’ve spotted it and look into the garden, you will immediately feel like you want to spend some time there! The place is super lovely in terms of atmosphere and the staff is attentive and friendly – so, really creating the perfect surrounding situation.

We went for a few starters to share, like the “sourdough bread with hummus” (EUR 6.50), which was decent for European hummus.

The “three pickled herrings with rape seed oil and marinated onions” (EUR 5.20) were a nice bite. Sure, relatively simple, but enjoyable if you like the taste of fish.

To me, the most disappointing dish were the “small meatballs, mustard cream and fresh horseradish” (EUR 5.50). Not to say that I disliked them, but they were just rather uneventful from a flavour and texture perspective.

The “cod ceviche with grapefruit and sweet potato chips” (EUR 21.30) looked a bit small, and it was, but it turned out to be actually enough to get one bite – also, due to the fact that it wasn’t really a taste revelation.

My main course, however, the “Iberico Secreto, smashed coco beans, chanterelles, apple cabbage salad” (EUR 32.10) worked quite well in terms of flavour and texture combination. Frankly, though, for Berlin, I found the price for the size of the dish relatively steep. But, still worth paying, as it was quite tasty.

The “ice coffee” (EUR 6.50) is a sugar bomb – enjoyable, very much so. Healthy, not so much.

The “lemon thyme” (EUR 6.50) lemonade, which I had ordered in the beginning was tasty, but, frankly, I also found that a bit expensive for Berlin.

The place is rather versatile in terms of setup and decoration. The inside is rather spacious, and it looks like it is a former stage or theatre or the like.

If you go to the side of the place and up the stairs, there is even an event room, which you can also rent – and apparently where many movies have been created already in the past.

What I truly liked, though, was the outside. When you get to sit in the garden and the weather is good, it is really perfect there. Depending on the spot you take, you have your privacy in the middle of the green, and you get, on the other hand, a bit of shade, so it’s really quite perfect to sit outside.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Clärchens – the place is exquisite, the service is lovely, and the food is acceptable. This is, for sure, not the gourmet place you need to visit from a purely culinary perspective, however, if you’re looking for a nice and relaxed place to chill, then the Clärchens is quite perfect really!
