3. August 2011: Restaurant salt

| August 6, 2011 | 0 Comments

A restaurant called salt? Yeah, and there is a reason to that. No, the food is not too salty and no, salt is not their main course. But they offer you one interesting thing to put on yoru bread which you get served right after placing your order: Smoked salt. You can’t have salt smoked, you say? Let me tell you, you’re wrong!

The three different types of bread come served together with nam gai (chicken salad), créme fraiche with sorrell, and – exactly! – smoked salt. The chicken salad is okay, and the créme fraiche with sorrell is good, and the smoked salt is basically just salty as it is supposed to be but the whole thing gets pretty interesting when you start tasting the smoke in your mouth – just from the salt grains.

The restaurant offers an interesting concept – a 3 course menu for only EUR 35.00. Pretty fair in price considering what you get. I had the starter of goat cheese au gratin, charantis melon, and herb salad (EUR 12.00). The goat cheese au gratin was good but too liquid (the outer form was not stable at all), the melon was good in taste and the herb salat was pretty tasty.

The middle course, the lemon risotto with a feat egg tomato, and rucola (EUR 13.50) was very rich in taste and absolutely appealing. Only the fact that the rice corns were a bit too crunchy – so not exactly boiled long enough was a bit disappointing. Taste-wise, the lemon risotto was great and its creaminess was great! Also the stuffed tomato was great in taste (and I usually really dislike warm tomatoes).

The main course was a beef filet from a young beef, potato-chorizo, olive, and grill condiments (EUR 28.00 / +10.00 EUR in addition to the menu price). The beef filet was absolutely tender and great in taste. The combination of potatoes, olives, grill condiments and some kind of chorizo was absolutely rich in taste but as it was combined it was pretty difficult to figure the single ingredients.

My company had a loup de mer as a main course. The fish was delicious: tender, juicy, and rich in taste. Overall, pretty amazing.

The dishes in the restaurant Salt were pretty good – the starter was a bit of a disappointment but then it got better and better with every course (a pity I didn’t have time for more courses). A bottle of water costs a decent EUR 5.50, a bottle of Carthago (Nero d’Avola), 2008 costs EUR 35.00. And a double espresso costs a ridiculous EUR 2.90.

The restaurant salt has two levels – some tables are located on the entrance level which looks nice in general but the prettier part is on the second floor which is kind of a little in-house balcony. The design of the tables is pretty simple as there are just wooden tables. Still, the whole concept seems modern and appealing – dry but alive. Difficult to describe but definitely great. A pretty entertaining element are the lamps hanging from the ceiling – their outer part moves and the shape keeps changing back and forth.

The waitress who served us did her job pretty well. In the beginning everything was close to perfect – she was friendly, attentive and seemed pretty competent. While the evening progressed, the quality of the service decreased. While she was still friendly when she was at our table, she was not really attentive anymore. The wine glass was not refilled anymore, the water glasses neither. A pity because otherwise it would have been truly great.

To sum up the experience at the Restaurant Salt: Very good dishes decreasing in quality with every course. There is room for improvement as in my opinion the quality of the dishes or rather the quality of preparation should not vary too much within one dinner experience. The prices are more than fair for what you get (even taking into account the room for improvement).

The ambiente in the restaurant is appealing, modern, interesting and warm. The service quality varied over time but in general, I can’t complain about it.

Overall, I can absolutely recommend the Restaurant Salt: Great experience with huge potential if service quality will remain constant over the time of a dinner and the quality of the dish preparation will remain stable over the time of a dinner.
