An interesting Scottish dinner experience: Restaurant Boisdale of Belgravia (27. June 2023)

When I was suggested to visit this place, I was a bit surprised since it turned out to be a Scottish (not a British!) restaurant. Since my colleague is Scottish, though, this started making a lot more sense. And I must say, my Scottish food experience was a pleasant one. We started with “beer sticks (pork, chilli and fennel)” (GBP 4.95), which are basically dried sausages and “crispy fried arancini (Sicilian rice balls, Alpine cheese, harissa)” (GBP 8.95), which were sufficiently nice. A bit expensive for what it is, but still tasty.

As a starter, I went for the “roast mini Dumfriesshire blackface haggis (neeps, tatties, liquor)” (GBP 12.75), and while it is a rather heavy and intense dish, I absolutely enjoyed it. I’m sure, haggis is not for everyone, but if you like morcilla, then you will definitely enjoy haggis – and I did!

Then it was time for the main course, which was served with a selection of sides like the “truffle, rosemary & Parmesan chips” (GBP 6.75), which were okay, but too dry for my personal gusto. The “sautéed spinach, Amalfi lemon, olive oil” (GBP 7.50) was fine, but felt a bit overpriced, and ultimately, the “broccoli, smoked olive oil” (GBP 6.00) was rather bland in taste. The “smoked béarnaise sauce” (GBP 3.50) was nice and went well with the meat.

The “châteaubriand” (GBP 89.00) was to share, hence, we would both get such a plate. But it still felt somehow like it was a bit overpriced, given you would just end up with three slices of meat. To be fair though, the meat was great, tender, aromatic, truly enjoyable!

What I liked about the Boisdale were not only the dishes, but also the interior. And if you stay after 8.30pm, you would also experience some live music performance.

The service staff is friendly and attentive – I must say they really take care of you. And even when we needed a bit of time (quite a bit!) to pick what we wanted to eat and drink, they remained friendly and didn’t become impatient or anything.

All in all, the place is really quite lovely and if you manage to pay it a visit, then it’s definitely something you should do while in London. Book in advance, though.
