Lost a bit in quality over the years, but at least it had nice Paraguayan music: Restaurant Leuen (1. July 2023)

| August 20, 2023 | 0 Comments

It is a bit more than 8 years ago since I’ve last been to the Leuen, and I have good memories of the place. In 2020, the owner of the restaurant changed, so, the whole thing changed quite a bit. Maybe it was a coincidence, but it seemed to be Paraguayan weeks when we were there – hence, the menu was a bit influenced by that. As an amuse bouche from the kitchen you would get the “Leuen sausage with a tomato sauce” and I must say, it was totally decent.

The “Leuen chorizo con salsa criolla y patatas dulces (spicy Leuen sausage served with a spicy coriander vinaigrette and fried sweet potato chips)” (CHF 22.00) really smiled at you when it was served. Frankly, a bit childish, but the dish actually still made me smile. The sausage was still good, but it also has a rather intense and peculiar taste, so, you might end up with the conclusion that a full sausage would be too much – as I did.

As a second starter, we went for the “duo de empanaditas mandioca de carne et mandioca y queso Paraguay (two empanadas filled with ‘beef and manioc’ and ‘cheese and manioc’)” (CHF 18.00). Upfront, I found the price for two (!) empanadas definitely too high, but, I must admit, they went very well with the two sauces.

As a main, I went for the “veal liver, served with crispy roesti” (CHF 42.50) and while the roesti was actually quite exquisite, I must admit that the liver wasn’t as great. Somehow, the liver was too chewy.

All in all, the Leuen is still decent, but it doesn’t keep up with my memory of what the Leuen was. So, if you are somewhere close to that, then it’s worth paying the place a visit, if you’re not, it’s also not worth it going the full way.
