A well-hidden steakhouse worth visiting if you like meat: Restaurant Gaucho (21. September 2023)

It’s six years ago since I’ve last been to the Gaucho, and I somehow don’t remember why I don’t come here more often. The place is nice in terms of interior design, and if the weather is good, there is even a little terrace at the back, where you have your peace and quiet to enjoy a good meal. We went for the “various antipasti” (CHF 25.00 per person) as a starter to share. Since my friend does not like fish dishes, and there was sea bream tartare as part of the antipasti, I had asked if they can potentially change that – and they did, without being complicated at all. Which is something I do appreciate. The selection consisted of albondigas with Parmesan cream, chorizo slices with jalapeños, burrata with pesto and cherry tomatoes, and two kinds of dumplings – and everything was quite tasty.

The Gaucho is known for its meat – so we decided to get two different pieces of meat and share it (so we both get to try a bit more). I went for the “beef filet (300gr)” (CHF 69.00) with “side dishes” (CHF 8.00). The side dishes are basically a few rosemary potatoes and some veggies. And frankly, if you pay CHF 69.00 for the meat, I find adding CHF 8.00 for some veggies a bit off. In any case, the meat was delicious. It was not only cooked to perfection (medium, but more with a tendency towards medium-rare), but it also had a great flavour profile. I mean, very often you have ‘tender but bland’ meat. This one was the very best of both – tender and great in taste!

What I actually liked even better was the “Prime Rib (300gr)” (CHF 57.00) with “side dishes” (CHF 8.00) as the meat was juicer and had more structure. So, both pieces of meat were excellent! For me, definitely a place I should come back to more often to enjoy the quality of the meat.

I was a bit surprised that there were basically just two chefs in the kitchen and one waiter (which also seems to be the owner). Sure, the place wasn’t super full, but there were like 25 guests or so, and the guy was on top of everything, which is quite rare to see these days! So, not only a lovely place (especially the terrace) with good food for (relatively) fair prices (ignoring the charge for side dishes), but also with good and friendly service. So, all in all, you should definitely try the Gaucho, when you’re in Zurich!
