7. August 2011: Restaurant Simonis aan Zee
Although my host does not like fish she recommended me to try this – apparently – typical Dutch dish called “herring” (with something, but I got issues with remembering the Dutch words). In any case, it is pretty much smoked herring with onions – and after you’re done, you have a pickle so the taste of the herring won’t be too intense in your mouth.
Although at first, kind of raw/smoked herring does not seem too appealing and you basically eat it by hand, I must admit: It is damn tasty! I cannot really outline why that is but to be frank, it is really good in taste. If you have the opportunity to try it, you should (unless, of course, you’re absolutely not into fish). The price of EUR 2.25 per Herring is – in my understanding also pretty fine. They day before I tried exactly the same in Rotterdam and it cost EUR 1.95 – and was, in my understanding, equally good. But honestly, 30 cents more or less don’t matter – just try it, it’s great!
On service you cannot judge as you go pick it up yourself and sit down. Also, atmosphere has its own story – there is none. It is somewhat nice because you can look at the beach but otherwise, it is nothing you need to see really. So atmosphere is absolutely nothing special and service cannot be judged on – still, go there if you can (or try it somewhere else), it is absolutely tasty!
