Delicious seafood and especially ceviche experience: Restaurant A Cevicheria by Kiko (4. November 2023)

Given Lisbon is close to the sea, the decision to try a seafood place was relatively easily taken. And given they had a tasting menu called “A Cevicheria Tasting Menu” (EUR 68.70), the decision was even easier how to progress. The evening started with “corn Bread with butter and spread” and I must admit that the corn bread was delicious, the cracker was nice, and the two spreads with which the breads were served were exquisite.

The first course of the evening was a “‘Puro’ ceviche (croaker, sweet potato purée, red onion and wakame seaweed)” (usually EUR 19.30), which was a good start into the evening. I liked the way the fish was cut and the sauce in which the ceviche was served was rather delicious. Personally, I’m not sure, I would have needed the wakame seaweed, but other than that, it was a good start.

I liked the second ceviche, the “Portuguese ceviche (codfish, octopus, textured potatoes, slow-cooked egg yolk and parsley)” (usually EUR 21.20) even more as the texture profile of the cod and the octopus complimented itself quite nicely. On top of that, the egg yolk really added a creaminess and smoothness to the dish, which was lovely.

Last but not least, the “tuna and foie gras ceviche (tuna, foie gras, beetroot, raspberry, lychee and hazelnut)” (usually EUR 20.40) really blew my mind. The tuna had a lovely intensity, and while I was very sceptical, when I had seen this dish on the menu because I found the application of foie gras to a ceviche a bit of an abomination, I must say it worked a charm as grated foie gras on top of the ceviche. So, frankly, of all three ceviches, this one was definitely the best.

The “octopus and quail egg causa (potato purée, octopus, quail egg, pickled shallots, snow pea, cuttlefish ink and chicharron)” (usually EUR 23.70) looked a bit disappointing at first in terms of size, but all the prettier in terms of presentation. I really enjoyed the texture of the octopus, as it was smooth and not chewy at all, which is often not the case. The combination of the different textures and flavours in combination with the crunchiness of the chicharron made it a dish I quite enjoyed.

The last savoury course of the day was the “quinotto with red mullet and black tiger prawn tempura (quinoa, red mullet, black tiger prawn, mussel, oyster foam and tosaka seaweed)” (usually EUR 29.40) and I must say it was interesting, but not something I would necessarily eat again. The overall flavour of the dish was somewhat overpowered by the seafood flavour, which was not that amazing really. However, the red mullet was tasty, and so was the black tiger prawn tempura – that one was actually delicious. Other than the food, I really liked the fact that the chefs are located right in front of you, and you can watch them prepare every single dish (at least the cold dishes like the ceviche).

There was also a dessert included in the menu, but I decided to skip it as I was just too full from the savoury dishes.

The place is nice and definitely has a bit of an eye-catcher with the huge octopus hanging from the ceiling. What was surprising me a bit was the number of people who would come alone to eat. I mean, I’m used to eating alone when travelling, but I was rather surprised to see so many fellow foodies to dine alone. This truly seems to be a foodie spot for solo travellers.

All in all, I enjoyed the evening at the A Cevicheria by Kiko – delicious dishes, fair prices, and caring and nice waiters and waitresses making sure you have a pleasant evening. Unfortunately, they do not take reservations and only accept walk-ins, but if you’re one or two people, it doesn’t seem to be overly difficult if you do not come at the typical ‘dinner times’ of Portuguese people (i.e., rather late).
