My first Burmese cuisine experience: Restaurant Lahpet West End (6. November 2023)

| January 4, 2024 | 0 Comments

Since I’ve never been to a Burmese restaurant before, I decided to give the Lahpet a try when I walked by and realised its specialisation. Luckily, they serve a “Lunch Menu” for only GBP 15.00 until 4pm. And given the selection of the lunch menu that day was quite appealing, I decided to for it and picked the “Lahpet Thohk (tea-leaf salad, pickled tea, double fried beans, cabbage, tomato, chilli, dried shrimp, sesame seeds, garlic oil, peanuts)” (usually GBP 10.00), which was surprisingly refreshing and nice, although it didn’t look all too appealing when it was served.

As a main, I decided to go for the “Ohn-No Kauk Swe (coconut noodles with chicken; egg noodles, shallots, spring onion, paprika oil, crispy wonton, egg, lime, coriander)” (usually GBP 16.50), which was lovely. I liked the texture of the noodles and the flavour profile of the whole soup. What I was missing a bit in it was the spiciness. And there were no ‘additional spices’ you could add to the dish. To be fair, though, I hadn’t asked for additional spices either.

In any case, the food offering – especially considering it would have cost me GBP 26.00 instead of GBP 15.00 if I had taken the lunch menu regularly that day – is quite nice and the food quality is actually great.

On top of that, the inside of the place is rather nice too. Especially the upper floor, which was empty since it was like 3.45pm and there were obviously not too many people having ‘lunch’.

I suppose, the only thing I didn’t really like all too much was the speed of the service. They were friendly, but they were definitely not attentive. I mean, you have to be quite patient when you want to place your order, to ask for the cheque, and to actually settle the bill.

Other than that, my first Burmese experience was a truly pleasant and enjoyable one!
