A wanna be Peruvian restaurant: Restaurant Monmouth Kitchen (9. November 2023)

| January 6, 2024 | 0 Comments

Given I’ve spent the past few days cooking at Le Cordon Bleu and you usually end up eating what you’ve prepared throughout the day, I was not really too hungry for dinner. However, given this day the course was done exceptionally early, I felt a bit hungry again and decided to try a restaurant for a late dinner. Firstly, it’s not as easy as you might believe it is to find a restaurant, which is open well after 9.30pm. Secondly, I decided to go for something light and went for what was advertised as a ‘Peruvian’ restaurant.

Given there was quite some food consumption before, I decided to have a few small bites and went for the “spicy chicken tacos with rocoto yogurt” (GBP 8.00), which were definitely not what I had expected. I mean, we talk ‘hard shell tacos’, which is definitely neither a Mexican thing nor a Peruvian, but an American version of what they call a taco! The stuffing was quite nice, but in all honesty, I find hard shell tacos an abomination.

Secondly, the “sea bass ceviche (with avocado, corn and red onion)” (GBP 14.00) is a dish you can probably call Peruvian, but unfortunately that was the weakest dish of the three I’ve tried. Especially since the level of acidity was way too high, so it was ultimately not really that pleasurable any more.

Last but not least, I had gone for the “arancini (with white ragù and mozzarella)” (GBP 12.00), which is very definitely not a Peruvian dish, but an Italian dish. To be fair, super delicious and definitely comforting, but in no world whatsoever Peruvian. So, not sure if the label is deliberately put wrong by the restaurant or if it is just not labelled correctly in various apps, but I would so very much recommend them to change the label, because this is not Peruvian food.

Last but not least, the place is quite buzzing, so it’s not easy to get a table, and if you want to dine here, then I would highly recommend you to book a table well in advance. Then again, this is kind of true for each and every a bit better restaurant in London. Last but not least, the waiter was friendly and also relatively attentive, so the whole visit was over in about 45 minutes. In a nutshell, the Monmouth Kitchen is fine, but nothing memorable.
