Another great find for a delicious lunch, but in a too noisy environment: Restaurant Emazulwini (1. December 2023)

After a few days in and around Cape Town, I figured how positively surprised I am by the versatility and quality of the food scene in Cape Town. The Emazulwini is a nice little restaurant located in the food court area of a yet to be built mall, which offers great dishes around millet for lunch. The “3-course menu” (450 ZAR) was the preferred choice and I went for the “Izingingila (millet bread with chicken gizzard terrine and tomato velouté)”, which was intense in terms of flavours, but also nice in terms of combination of textures and flavour.

The “Invama venkomo (beef, millet dauphinoise, sheep’s curd, broccoli)” was good as well – the only downside in this case was the speed of service, as the dish was served without further explanation, and once I had started cutting the meat (you can see the little incision), the waiter came back saying that the sauce is missing. Understandable, but maybe worth saying before you walk away. Other than that, the beef was aromatic and had nice grill flavours, so, definitely enjoyable.

Last but not least, I had the “An African Love Letter (millet chocolate tart, coffee cremeux, and roasted banana ice cream)”, which was great and not. Great, because I liked the flavour combination and it worked really well, but not so great because I really don’t like chocolate too much and the dish was way too chocolate-y.

The place is nice in terms of interior design and quite appealing …

… however, they are still building, so, throughout the whole lunch there was the background noise of drills, which is super annoying at some point!

Other than that, the place is lovely, the food is great, the price is more than great, and the service is friendly and relatively attentive. Given the size of the restaurant with about 5-6 tables, I would highly recommend you to book in advance (rather than not book and not find a space).
