An absolutely amazing wine estate with not that amazing wines: Wine Tasting @ Babylonstoren Wine Estate (4. December 2023)

| January 26, 2024 | 0 Comments

One of the main reasons you have to discover South Africa is definitely the wine region. Franschhoek and surroundings offers a bunch of nice wine estates. And you have the possibility to use the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which leaves you a bit “stressed”, though, since you have to be on time to not miss the next stop. Hence, my recommendation is to hire a private driver (350 ZAR / hour), who takes you to wine estates of your choice.

Starting with one of the most famous ones, Babylonstoren, it is worth doing a tasting here. Keep in mind, though, that this estate actually charges an entry fee of 100 ZAR/person (which I’m not aware that other estates do). Personally I didn’t like the place because the wine is too great (I found it overall rather average), but because the estate is lovely, and price wise, it’s never wrong to try the “Seven Wines from the Babylonstoren range” for 110 ZAR.

The tasting room is quite nice overall and if you pair your wines with a “Just a Snack (Babylonstoren roasted nuts, biltong, olives, “hangop” cheese truffles, bread crisps)” (190 ZAR), then you have definitely some truly tasty bites to go with your wines.

The place is mainly stunning for itself – like, there is a nice entry to the whole estate …

… you can see the wineyard with the mountains in the back …

… and the actual wine buildings …

… and finally the store to buy whatever you need and want.

All in all, the Babylonstoren Wine Estate is definitely a place worth seeing and having a few wines to try. So, make sure to organise the trip early and try the different wines.
