Delicious food, but a tiny bit too slow service on a marvellous estate: Food & Wine Tasting @ Creation Wines (5. December 2023)

| January 31, 2024

The Creation Wines estate was recommended to me by a friend, so I decided to give it a try. And I must say, if you are not planning ahead and check the roads on Google Maps, it will take you through a very bumpy dirt road where you are wondering if you will ever arrive. That being said, the drive is worth it as the place is quite lovely, and the food selection is even better. As a first dish, I went for the “springbok carpaccio, cabbage, pistachio, radish, violets” (120 ZAR), which was the last form of the springbok I haven’t enjoyed yet. And it was truly tasty and enjoyable. And it even worked well in combination with the radishes.

Next in line was the “herbed trout, kohlrabi, fennel” (165 ZAR) and while it was not at the same level as the springbok carpaccio, it was also enjoyable and the mayo dips were super nice too.

Then, it was time for the “lamb roti, waterblommetije, num-num” (95 ZAR). Firstly, I was super surprised to hear that there is an ingredient called ‘num-num’, and apparently, it’s very seasonal. In any case, the little Indian style taco was absolutely amazing. Two quick bites, so, definitely not enough food for a full wine pairing (especially when they are quite generous), but damn delicious.

The “springbok, maize, chakalaka, green beans” (205 ZAR) was my last choice because I was still quite hungry after the initial few courses – and it was a good choice. Especially, since it was the first time I had tried ‘chakalaka’, and it was delicious. More of an Indian flavour (although it’s Cape Malay) than anything else, but definitely enjoyable.

The place is not only good in terms of food, but it’s so lovely in terms of the whole estate – when you enter and drive to the actual main building, it’s not that special yet, but this changes when you arrive up there …

… I mean, the view is just breathtaking and definitely something you want to enjoy while being there.

And what I absolutely loved, besides the artsy statues themselves, is the fact that the birds also seem to enjoy this quite a bit …

… as you can see, an actual bird placed itself on the bird to rest there – loved it!

Ultimately, you enter the restaurant, where you find what I had described above. The food is lovely, the staff is friendly, but the speed of service is definitely lacking! I mean, you need to be so darn patient sometimes, as it takes more than 30–45 minutes between courses. Which is of course okay if you intend to spend several hours here, but if you are more like let’s try a few wines and eat something in the next 2 hours, then this is definitely way too long!

So, all in all, I absolutely enjoyed the Creation Wines Estate – lovely place, absolutely amazing in terms of design and art, but definitely also something to visit in terms of food. In terms of wines, it wasn’t a revelation either, but all in all, the Creation Wines is definitely worth visiting.
