Celebrating 100 Years of the Red Cross: Food Festival @ Lumphini Park (17. December 2023)

It seems that I’m lucky whenever I go to Bangkok, since there is always some kind of festival when I’m there. This time it was the “100 Years Red Cross” festival and it was the last day, which was celebrated with a lot of food stalls in the Lumphini park. It’s hard to say what exactly I ate, but I was keen on trying a few things and I must  say, that some of them were actually quite enjoyable, while others were not so much. Let’s start with the first one, which was the “fried pork fat” (70 THB). Well, to be fair, I had expected it to be pork belly and not just pork fat. So, when I had the first bite, I was a bit “uhm, yeah, not great”, but then it actually turned out to be quite flavourful. However, this is nice for a few bites, but a whole box is – in my opinion – too much.

Then, I tried the “pure beef meatball” (10 THB each), which is served to you in a little plastic bag with some sauce – and it was nice. It didn’t taste like too much (the meat, I mean), but it was okay.

My favourite that evening was the “corn cream tart” (25 THB), as it was nicely crispy on the outside, and it had a custard filling with corn inside. Careful, scorching hot (actual hot, not chili hot)! Other than that, delicious!

The “sour pickled fish” (100 THB) is basically what it claims to be, sour, and pickled. And I must say that it was rather enjoyable as well. Not easy to eat, as you get a little plastic fork to break it apart, which isn’t really strong enough to break the fried fish, but it was nice.

Last but not least, I went for the “squid balls” (40 THB for four), which were interesting to eat. I have eaten something similar back in 2017 in Taiwan, but didn’t quite recall the flavour of it, so I must say it was nice.

All in all, obviously, this is not really a repeatable experience for others, but in a nutshell, I would highly recommend you to try out some of the foods in the street stalls. There are really great things, and they really cost nothing. Especially from a European perspective!
