A speak easy with good drinks, but rather on the small side of things: You Know Where Speakeasy (17. December 2023)

Sometimes Google is your best friend! The You Know Where is a nice and small speak easy. Booking in advance is highly recommended since the place is small, but we were lucky enough to score a place by the bar, and then a table. Once you’re seated, you’re served some “seasoned spicy banana chips”, which are quite nice. But you also need them to bridge the time until your beverages are served, since that really takes a while. I had asked for sparkling water, i.e., soda water, and that alone took about 15 minutes. And only after reminding them twice, it was finally served.

Firstly, I went for the “Holy Grail (Tequila infused with Chrysanthemum, passion fruit purée, lime juice, simple syrup, homemade grenadine)” (420 THB), which was light and refreshing, hence, an enjoyable drink. The only part, which wasn’t enjoyable, was the waiting time, as it really took them a while to prepare the drink (and mine was one of the first ones being ready).

Secondly, I went for the “Crimson Crux (42-below vodka, Bacardi white rum, bianco, kirfir lime syrup)” (420 THB), which was also rather light and flavourful. So, they know their drinks. Sure, for Thai standards those are not cheap, but they are good and enjoyable, so definitely something you can try.

I liked the bar itself a lot, as the interior is nice from a design perspective, but it also has a nice atmosphere.

If you need to wash your hands, you need to go upstairs, and the stairs are rather small and feel like you’re being led into an alternative den. Quite special and different from other restaurants.

The interior decoration of the place is also generally nice, i.e., quite a bit different than normally. It’s not classically ‘lovely’, but it is functional and has that ‘little extra’.

The entrance is “hidden”, i.e., the door is not easily visible, but there is a ‘light cocktail glass’ on the ground, and that is your indication for the bar entrance.

All in all, the You Know Where is a nice place – nothing extraordinary, and the entrance is really just hidden in the dark instead of being kind of a proper speakeasy entrance (i.e., through a fridge door or the like), but the place is nice and they know their drinks. Be patient, though, if you’re super thirsty, get a water or beer outside first, so you won’t wait for 15-20 minutes until you can finally drink something after you’ve sat down.
