A truly local Thai experience you wouldn’t normally discover as a tourist: Restaurant Savoey River View (18. December 2023)

We were lucky enough to get a truly local Thai dining experience as we have been taken around by locals and got to try a few very different dishes (which we couldn’t have ordered as the menu was entirely in Thai). The “crab curry” didn’t look too appealing, but it was actually absolutely exquisite in terms of taste and flavour.

The “son-in-law eggs” (95 THB) on the other hand were rather interesting, but not that amazing in terms of flavour and taste.

The “fish cakes” (160 THB) were nice, but comparatively boring in terms of flavour profile – still, with the sauce, they actually turned into something quite enjoyable.

The “spring rolls” were decent, but a bit too crunchy for my personal gusto – a bit less crunchy would have been more, in my opinion.

The “Chinese beans noodles with baked prawns” (300 THB) were nice in terms of flavour – the noodles were tasty, and so were the prawns. However, the prawns were not that many, which was a bit of a disappointment, as you would somehow expect that you get a bit of prawn with the dish as well and not just 98% noodles.

The “papaya salad with coconut milk rice” (120 THB) is one of the very typical Thai dishes, definitely worth trying while you’re in Thailand. This version was ‘decently’ spicy, i.e., there wasn’t the case that you would burn from the inside when enjoying the dish.

Last but not least, they also had nice fruit smoothies like the “Berry Mango Twist” (120 THB), which was very fruity, but also very sugary. What is nice about the place, besides the very caring and friendly service, is that you get to sit right by the river and enjoy the view. It’s a relatively industrial area, which makes the view not as pretty as if you would look onto Wat Arun, but it is still a nice view you can easily enjoy while dining there.

What I liked was the little ‘decoration’ in the form of small lizards running up and down the walls …

… and the view onto the river.

All in all, I can highly recommend you to try the Savoey River View if you want to experience something local with good and tasty Thai food for a very decent price.
