A lovely location, but you have to watch out for the mosquitos: Restaurant THE HOUSE by Ginger (19. December 2023)

Upon arrival, it was time to find a place, which offers good and tasty Thai food, hence, the Guide Michelin app was helpful again to find a Bib Gourmand place. Once seated down, we were attended by a very friendly waiter, who would take up the orders and help us out throughout the evening. We started with a “The House mixed appetizer platter (crispy prawn spring rolls; kham – traditional thai snack with herbs, peanut in cha-pu leaves; hot & sour minced chicken in crispy mini rice-paper parcels with plum dip; ma hor – minced marinated chicken, prawn and peanuts on pineapple; pak bung grob – crispy Thai water morning glory with tamarind sauce)” (395 THB), which had quite a couple of truly nice dishes like the little crispy veggie sticks with sauce or the minced chicken in crispy rice-paper parcels. Good if you want to try a few different dishes to get started.

The “refreshing watermelon with dried fish sugar” (155 THB) was something I intended to try for a while, and finally it was time. Frankly, it wasn’t as good as I had expected, but it was enjoyable overall. For some of us it tasted too much like fish, while I personally didn’t find the fish taste all too dominant.

The “roasted duck red curry with eggplant, pineapple, lychee, cherry tomatoes and sweet basils” (450 THB) was definitely one of the better dishes. The curry was absolutely marvellous in terms of flavour, and the duck was perfectly cooked – not too dry, but still very flavourful.

The “Ginger signature ‘rod-fai’ fried rice with crispy pork belly, crispy bacon, pickled garlic and chapoo leaf” (295 THB) wasn’t bad either. What I’m always finding a bit a lack of is the “meat” as in, there is a lot of stuff on the plate, but there are always only a few slices of whatever meat there is in the respective plate.

The “Thai style pomelo salad with prawns” (295 THB) was not as spicy as advertised, but the pomelo was actually quite enjoyable and lovely in terms of flavour profile.

The “signature Ginger & salted caramel” ice cream (135 THB) was good. I mean, the salted caramel ice cream was nice, but the crumbles and the almond shavings were not really necessary and didn’t add much to the dish (rather, worsened it).

The “Watermelon Juice” (130 THB) on the other hand was freshly pressed and wasn’t full of sugar, which was quite amazing (as you don’t get that too often these days).

The “Watermelon Mojito” (250 THB) on the other hand couldn’t quite keep up with that, as it was somehow lacking the flavour intensity of watermelon you would expect in such a drink.

All in all, THE HOUSE by Ginger is a nice place, which offers good Thai dishes. If you want to sit inside and ‘enjoy’ the AC, then I would highly recommend you to book in advance, as else you will have challenges to find a space inside, let alone, a space at all.
