Disappointing selection of local dishes: Restaurant La Plage @ Sheraton Grand Danang Resort & Convention Center (26. December 2023)

Of course, if you’re eating in the Sheraton, you’d expect to have international food, but the lack of local options was a bit surprising to me. I went for a few of the different dishes like the “seafood papaya salad (shrimp, squid, carrot, onion, coriander, roasted peanuts, fish sauce)” (288’000 VND), which was a massive portion, but I must admit, it was tasty. However, personally, I was somewhat surprised that they only had like 10 Vietnamese dishes and about 30 international ones …

… like the “gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp, toasted baguette)” (388’000 VND), which were decent, but far from the experience you have in a Spanish restaurant in Spain when ordering gambas.

The “seafood fried rice (prawn, squid, clams, crab, bean sprouts, spring onion)” (388’000 VND) on the other hand was great again. The part I found a bit confusing was the repetitiveness of the seafood. In all dishes it was gambas, clams, and squid. Not that I mind eating these, but that there is no distinction between the different options was a bit confusing.

What was not so great, though, were the beverages. While the “Kumquat Mojito (Kingston 62 white rum, Captain Morgan dark rum, kumquat juice, mint leaves, coriander, ginger syrup)” (178’000 VND) sounded marvellous, it was really just a watery drink. The “Power up (carrot, beetroot, orange juice, strawberry)” (98’000 VND) was slightly better, but also not really amazing in terms of flavour.

The place is nice since you have a view onto the beach – and it would of course be much, much nicer if it was sunny. The staff is friendly and attentive, but the overall experience is still somewhat not over the top, especially since the creation of the dishes takes quite a while.
