A simple little place in the vegetable village with decent food: Restaurant Spring Onion (28. December 2023)
The Spring Onion is a little family-owned restaurant located in the Vegetable Village – and probably a place you usually wouldn’t get to if it wasn’t for a guided tour. In any case, the place is lovely as it is located outside, in the middle of the vegetable fields, it’s covered from the rain, and the offering they have is simple, but enjoyable. It all started with “omelet and salad with rice paper”, where you get to build your own wrap. Frankly, not as easy as I had expected, but it was a nice bite.
Then, it was time for “veggie spring rolls”, which had been freshly prepared. And they were actually quite nice too – especially in combination with the simple, but tasty sauce.
The “papaya salad with rice crackers” was a bit special since you had to shovel the salad onto the rice crackers to eat – and that turned out to be trickier than expected. But, the green papaya salad was definitely enjoyable.
The “chicken with lemongrass and sticky rice” was fine as well. Personally, there was a bit too much lemongrass in the chicken, but it worked well with the rice heart – and the sauce.
The “green beans with carrots” were – again – incredibly nice. I’m not sure how exactly they prepare their green beans, but we’ve tried them now in a few places and each and every time, it was delicious. Definitely something I have to find the recipe for when getting home.
For dessert, the “rambutan” was served, which is comparable to a lychee, but is still a bit different. In any case, if you haven’t tried it, try it. It’s quite delicious.
I also went for “kumquat juice” and compared to the kumquat mojito I have had the other day in another place, this was actually very enjoyable.
The “hot green orange juice” turned out to be orange juice from green oranges (so they are only green on the outside) and it tasted like warm orange juice – which was surprisingly tasty.
As mentioned, the place is simple, but appealing …
… as it is located right in the middle of all these vegetable fields. However, if the weather was better, it would definitely be better.
All in all, if you are keen in seeing how they are planting their vegetables in and around Da Nang, then I can definitely recommend you to visit the vegetable village, and in that case you are also good to have lunch at the Spring Onion.
