A truly authentic experience when visiting Hue: Restaurant Madam Thu – Taste of Hue (29. December 2023)

The Madam Thu is a place worth visiting when you do a full-day tour of Hue. Sure, the place was part of a pre-organised tour, hence, my expectations weren’t too high, but I must say that I was super positively surprised. You kind of get to try the whole menu, which started with “rice cake with diced shrimp”, “rectangular dumpling” and “clear dumpling”. In all fairness, I’m not entirely sure what exactly I ate with all of these things, but I can tell you that the rice cake with diced shrimp and the rectangular dumpling were both great. The clear dumpling was a bit of something to get used to in terms of ‘texture’, though.

Next in line were the “mixed meat shrimp salad rolls” and the “fried spring rolls” and both were good. Especially, if you applied some spicy sauce to it, it made for a great dish.

Then, it was time for what they call the main course, i.e., the “grilled chopped pork and stuffed rice pancake with rice paper and salad”. While I found the sensation of creating your own dishes (i.e., by assembling everything into rice paper) quite lovely, I also must admit that it looks much easier than it is. I mean, some of the things just basically fell apart, and I ate the remains (which fell into my plate) with my fork. In any case, I quite liked the pancake, but found the texture of the pork a bit … interesting.

My favourite was, again, the “beef noodle soup”. Personally, I would have led with this one, as it warms up your customers (since it was raining cats and dogs again). With a bit of lime and chili, the beef noodle soup was absolutely amazing!

Last but not least, you’d get some “passion fruit and watermelon” for dessert, which were both fresh, ripe, and intense in flavour. So, all in all, the lunch was really an absolutely great one as you get everything you need and want and kind of get a run through the whole Vietnamese cuisine (it felt like at least).

The place is simple, but feels authentic and lovely.

So, even if you’re not part of a guided tour and ‘end up here’, I would still recommend you to go here and enjoy the food. It was a very pleasant, comfortable, tasty, and efficient experience.
