Exceptional service and tasty stuffed frog: Restaurant Sokkhak River (3. January 2024)

| April 4, 2024 | 0 Comments

The Sokkhak River was recommended by the hotel, hence, we figured why not give it a try! The “pounded chicken breast with red tree ants (chicken breast, red tree ants, galangal, garlic, shallots, dried shrimp, herbs, peanuts and vegetable crudités)” (USD 7.80) was overall okay, but the greens on the side were a bit surprising in flavour.

What I really liked was the “grilled stuffed frog (frogs stuffed with minced pork, Khmer spices, vermicelli, peanuts with pepper lime sauce and roasted tomato relish)” (USD 9.80). I know it sounds somewhat weird to eat a frog, but at least here they serve the whole frog – and the fact that it was stuffed with minced pork made it quite a tasty bite. I just wanted to try it since it was on the menu anyways, but it turned out to be great!

The “pork delicacy (minced pork, Khmer fermented fish, coconut cream, tamarind, sour Krasang fruit, kaffir lime leaf, galangal, Khmer spices, and sautéed mixed vegetables)” (USD 9.50) on the other hand wasn’t really to my liking. I mean, the meat wasn’t bad, but somehow the seasoning and the texture (some kind of root or something added to the meat) didn’t entirely work with my palate.

The “stir-fried shiny bush (stir-fried shiny bush with garlic seasoning and lemon)” (USD 5.60) – which I had mainly ordered due to its funny name, was amazing. The veggies were fresh, flavourful, and a good balance to all the different meat-based dishes!

The “Coconut Mojito (white rum, Malibu, mint leaves, lime wedge, brown sugar, soda water)” (USD 5.80) worked quite well too. It didn’t look much like coconut, but the flavour profile actually fit and it was an enjoyable slurp during dinner.

What was truly nice about the place was the quality of the service. They really went above and beyond when it comes to supporting you with anything. Was it brining ice, finding out the name of the song, which had just played on the radio, or really anything else.

The place is also nice on the terrace upstairs – a bit too plushy (in terms of cushion) for my personal gusto, but other than that, it’s quite lovely.

And on top of that, they also decorate the surroundings quite nicely!

So, all in all, I can recommend the Sokkhak River – make sure you find something nice to eat, and you’ll have a lovely time there!
