While the temples are worth visiting, the restaurant isn’t really: Restaurant Rom Chong Angkor (4. January 2024)

Another day visiting the lesser known temples around Siem Reap like Beng Mealea and Banteay Srei is definitely worth when you’re in Cambodia. The temples are lovely, and they are definitely worth visiting – sure, not as impressive as Angkor Wat, but still on the must-do list! Between temples, it was time for another lunch break, so, the Rom Chong Angkor is a place on its way. It’s not necessarily the most exciting place to eat, but they offer decent dishes and are friendly – or even a bit too friendly.

The “vegetable and meat spring rolls” (USD 6.75) were decent, but hard to eat as they were sticking to each other, and they fell apart when you would take one of them off the plate. The dipping sauce with peanuts was okay, but far from exciting in terms of flavour.

The “chicken with banana flower salad” (USD 7.00) sounded much better than it was. It didn’t feel like salad, and the banana flowers were invisible to me, plus it didn’t taste like too much really.

The “fried beef kalian” (USD 6.75) was the outstanding dish for this lunch. It was actually enjoyable and the flavours of the meat in its sauce were nice and enjoyable.

The “stir-fried Khmer chicken spicy” (USD 7.50) was the second enjoyable dish. Sure, not the best one ever, but a good and enjoyable version of stir-fried chicken.

The place is quite simple, which is okay, but it is also superbly touristic. While the place yesterday was in a nutshell similar, this feels much more industrialised and given I saw employees not wash their hands when leaving the toilet, it makes me question the sanity standards here. No bad effects the next day, to be fair, but it doesn’t leave you with a good feeling when you see that.

At least the way to the toilets looks quite nice …

So, all in all, the Rom Chong Angkor is a place of questionable excellence – some of the food is decent, the staff is friendly, but they are too friendly. They kept turning on the fan, while I actually wanted them to not have it turned on. So, sometimes friendly is too friendly. Not necessarily a place I would return to, but rather pass when visiting the temples.
