20. December 2009: Restaurant El Mariachi
“El Mariachi” is a restaurant situated in the middle of Tulum. As Tulum is basically one long street with some houses on both sides of the street you can’t really miss it.
And as it has a recommendation in the “Lonely Planet” (at least in the German version) you can also spot it by the amount of people sitting in the restaurant. This is already its major drawback: The city itself hasn’t anything to offer so you won’t go there unless you’re visiting the very beautiful maya ruins of Tulum (see below) and you just want to eat something close by.
The atmosphere could definitely be improved but given the circumstances, I’d call it acceptable and I’d say they made the best out of it.
The waiters are friendly and helpful (but I assume it helped that my friend is Mexican as chatting went on quite easy this way).
You can find a quite decent amount of different dishes on the menu – the main problem will probably be that you won’t be able to understand what they actually really are, or do you have an idea what “Gringas” are (as a dish)?
The food is served quickly and is very delicious. I had Quesadillas as a starter followed by Ceviche Mixto (with prawns and pulpo – veeery delicious).
The only little drawback besides the atmosphare is, that it is a bit expensive for Mexico but as Tulum is definitely living from the tourism and nothing else, the prices are still acceptable.
