8. September 2011: Restaurant Turbinenhalle
The “Spiegelplatte” (mirror plate) (CHF 23.50 per person; available only for 4 people and more) is quite big but also offers a great selection of different cold cuts, cheese, tatar, spring rolls, chicken breast, fried fish, melon, tomato, radichs, salad, and bread. The tatar was quite tasteful, the cold cuts pretty fresh, the cheese good but strong in taste, the vegetables and fruit fresh and flavourfull, and, finally, even the bread was good. The fried fish (“Fischknusperli”) was quite good, the spring rolls were not so special. The chicken breast with a special spice crust was tasteful, the bread baked with cheese was great.
Overall, the Spiegelplatte is a great selection of different foods for a group of people sitting together and having a beer (0,3L; CHF 4.50).
The atmosphere in the Turbinenhalle, which is also a brewery with its own beer (called Turbinenbräu), has to aspects: On on hand, it is modern and spacious as it is probably an old factory hall, secondly it is also a bit unpersonal due to exactly the same reason. So, unless you’re there in a group or you get to sit in a corner, it feels really unpersonal.
The service is friendly but not very attentive: they do their job and they do it in a reliable quality but it’s not their strongest point.
Overall, the restaurant Turbinenhalle is a nice place – not so atmospheric but still somehow nice. And the Spiegelplatte is big, tasteful, and also rather fair in price.
