8. January 2012: Restaurant The Pig’s Ear

Having a traditional Sunday roast is a good thing to start a Sunday in the UK – so I started with “Home Cured Spiced Beef Carpaccio, House Pickles, Caperberries, and Toast” (GBP 8.95). The spiced beef carpaccio was great in taste, very intense, very true, just tasty. In combination with the house pickles and the caperberries, it was even richer. The toast was forgotten at first and we had to reorder it.

The second course was a “Small Caesar Salad, Romaine Lettuce, Garlic Croutons, Pickled Anchovies, Soft Hen’s Egg” (GBP 7.75). The Caesar Salad was the disappointment of all the courses. The lettuce was okay but the sauce was boring, the garlic croutons were not a slight bit crunchy. The anchovies gave it the appropriate salty taste, and the soft hen’s egg was even good. But still, the whole salad was somewhat absolutely boring.

The third course on the other hand was absolutely great. A “Risotto with Seasonal Wild Woodland Mushrooms, Aged Parmesan, Fresh Herbs” (GBP 14.75) which was quite a portion was extremly rich, very tasty, the rice corns were cooked so they had the appropriate degree of al dente – being a slight bit crunchy still. The risotto was overall very tasty. There was a great variety of different mushrooms and they were fresh – just delicious!

The fourth course was a “35 Day Aged Sirloin of Scotch Beef, Roast Potatoes in Dripping, Yorkshire Pudding, Fresh Horseradish” (GBP 18.50). The aged sirloin was quite tasty but it had quite much fat so there was not too much meat overall. The roast potatoes in dripping, the carrots, and the fresh horseradish were quite tasty. The Yorkshire Pudding (the big thing in the picture) was something I have never had tried before and it does not taste like much itself but together with the sauce, it is quite nice.

Last but not least, I decided to have some ice cream (GBP 4.50) to round up the meal. The ice cream was not bad but it had too big pieces of actual ice in it which made it not that great. I guess one should not go for ice cream in a more or less typical gastropub in the UK, still, it was okay in taste at least.

Overall, the dishes are absolutely fine and tasty. The waitress was not always flawless but she did her job in a way that one could see she was really dedicated and tried her best – and she made a great job overall. The place is absolutely nice – it has the elements of (to my impression) typical English pub with the counter, the dark wooden elements but on the other hand it has a fireplace and a very nice interior all in all. Also, the prices are quite fair overall.

For a traditional Sunday roast, I can definitely recommend The Pig’s Ear – the only thing I would not recommend is the Cesar’s Salad.

I’d have great reservations of a review from someone who has never had Yorkshire Pudding before! How can anyone review anything in the UK when something as traditional as Yorkshire Pudding has never been tasted before???????
