9. February 2012: Schuhbeck’s Teatro

| February 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

A truly great experience one should attend when in Munich – Schuhbeck’s Teatro. Schuhbeck’s Teatro is a dining event by Alfons Schuhbeck which runs several restaurants in Munich – it is about more than dining as the whole evening is a tightly organised event. One has to book tickets in advance. Prices range between about 109 EUR and 2’050 EUR per person. The event starts at 8pm and if you are there a bit earlier you get to have an aperitivo in the entrance hall (which is included in the price). After the aperitivo you are guided to your table where everything is already set to start dinner. There is bread with two different kinds of spread – tomato spread and some kind of curry spread. Both are very tasty.

But not only the bread is ready to start but also the first course which is a selection of four different starters: a beetroot-horseradish mousse with smoked salmon; a prime boiled beef aspic with salsa verde; roastbeef with carrot-celery-ginger salad and herb frisee; and a cocktail of seafood. The smoked salmon with the beetroot-horseradish mousse was okay in taste, the prime boild beef aspic was good in combination with the salsa verde but nothing special on its own. The roastbeef on the other hand was pretty tasty and also fit well with the carrot-celery-ginger salad. The cocktail of seafood was pretty boring in taste though. So overall, the starter plate was of mixed quality – some very good others just average.

After some Ukrainian trapeze artists the next course was served: truffled potato soup with hamburgers on semolina gnocchi. This course was truly great as the taste of truffle was very decent and fit very well with the potato soup. The hamburgers (“Fleischpflanzerl”) was stuffed with spinach which made it very tasty. The semolina gnocchi were good too. Definitely a great dish.

After some more shows of muscle men artists and singing rounds, a boeuflamott with pink grilled veal fillet and savoy and green cabbage, dumplings, vegetables, zatar and 7 kinds of pepper jus. The boeuflamott was quite okay – but the pink grilled veal fillet was definitely absolutely great. The cabbage was very tasty and the espuma on top of it gave it a certain smoothness.

To round up the evening, we were brought a selection of deserts: orange blossom panna cotta with mango chilli ice cream which was very tasty – especially the ice cream. The tiramisu was good and the iced emperor’s espuma was quite fine too. The two different chocolate mousses (brown and white) with amarena espuma was very tasty – especially the white chocolate mousse was smooth and rich.

Overall, the dishes at Schuhbeck’s Teatro are are very fine but not really outstanding. Somehow you would expect a bit more from a one starred Michelin chef. Still, I must admit that all the dishes are prepared on a high level and definitely absolutely good.

The whole experience is pretty amazing though. Even the shows, looking at each of it individually, are not outstanding but form a very nice and complete concept all together.

A nice goodie at the end was that Alfons Schuhbeck himself showed up (and sang some song). Not that it made any difference to the whole experience but it is a nice gesture somehow.

Overall, I can definitely recommend going to Schuhbeck’s Teatro – nice atmosphere, good serivce, good dishes and – taking into account th entertainment – fair prices too.
